Vapor Intrusion Services
Jump to Projects
Vapor intrusion is a growing environmental concern for industrial, commercial and residential buildings across the country. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in soil or groundwater can result in vapors migrating upwards into a building, and may pose health hazards to people living or working in that building. The recognition of this exposure pathway has increased in recent years and many state agencies have developed, or are in the process of developing, guidance for evaluating this pathway.
ENSR has the full range of technical capabilities and experience to resolve vapor intrusion issues. We measure and evaluate vapor intrusion and mitigate if there is a need. ENSR provides:
- Strategy Development
- Measurements
- Risk Evaluation
- Remediation
- Risk Communication
- Litigation Support
Projects:
Subslab Depressurization System Design -Confidential Client
Glenville, WV Retail/ Commercial Building Owner
Methane gas was collecting beneath a retail/commercial building, creating a hazardous work environment for employees. ENSR designed a subslab depressurization system that included vertical wells installed through the building's floor slab and a vapor extraction and diffusion system. As a result, ENSR cost-effectively reduced the health and safety risk caused by the methane gas and helped the client avoid future litigation costs.
Vapor Intrusion Evaluation and Remedy Selection in Residential Dwelling
Confidential Client - Massachusetts
Elevated concentrations of chlorinated organic compounds were identified in the basement of a residential dwelling located over the contaminant plume. ENSR developed a conceptual site model, performed sampling, analysis and data evaluation, and completed a risk assessment. Then through regulatory compliance/consulting and remedy evaluation, ENSR's remediation and implementation workplan was approved by the regulatory agency. ENSR installed a cost-effective vapor mitigation measure and performed testing to demonstrate effectiveness of the measure. ENSR achieved compliance in a timely manner, reducing the risk of potential health problems to residents and protecting the client from future litigation.
Vapor Intrusion Mitigation in Massachusetts Public Building
Confidential Client
Hydrocarbons were accumulating beneath a public building undergoing reconstruction. ENSR reviewed and redesigned the existing subslab depressurization system to reduce installation costs, developed a performance monitoring plan, and installed a Liquid Boot geomembrane vapor barrier to prevent future vapor intrusion.
